By ACM Ahlers - 3 Feb 2012
This is an important notice for anyone who insures their
Dwelling (house) and/or Personal Effects (contents).
With effect from 1 February 2012, the Earthquake Commission Levy
(EQC Levy) part of your insurance cost is going to rise.
This EQC Levy is collected by all insurance companies on behalf
of the Earthquake Commission. The Earthquake Commission's insurance
scheme provides automatic cover for natural disaster damage.
Dwellings are insured up to a maximum of $100,000 plus goods and
service tax (GST). Personal Effects are insured up to $20,000 plus
(GST).
The levies will rise from $0.05 to $0.15 per $100 of insurance
cover. The maximum levy charge per dwelling/residential unit will
increase from $57.50 to $172.50 (GST) and $11.50 to $34.50 (GST)
per contents policy. The Government has imposed this increase to
ensure EQC can continue to meet its long-term operating costs, and
to rebuild the Earthquake Commission's Natural Disaster Fund to
ensure it can provide natural disaster cover to New Zealanders in a
sustainable way.
